Exterior Work Built for Everson's Climate

Everson sits in the Nooksack River valley in Whatcom County, close enough to the water and the coast range that homes here deal with a specific combination of weather stresses: damp marine air moving in off the Salish Sea, long stretches of driving rain through fall and winter, and enough shade and moisture retention in places to keep moss and algae active for much of the year. None of that is unusual for northwest Washington, but it adds up. Siding, trim, and roofing that aren't matched to this climate tend to show it early — through swelling, peeling paint, soft spots, or a green-gray film that keeps coming back no matter how many times it's washed off.

We're a Lynden-based crew that works Everson and the surrounding Whatcom County communities regularly, not as an occasional stop on a bigger territory. That matters more than it sounds like it should. A crew that's seen how a particular valley, tree line, or exposure behaves over a few winters makes better calls on flashing details, ventilation, and product selection than one working from a generic spec sheet.

What Everson Homes Tend to Face

A lot of the homes we see around Everson are older wood-frame construction, sometimes with additions or re-sides layered on over the decades. Common issues we run into on inspection include:

  • Wood or engineered wood siding that has absorbed moisture at butt joints and panel edges, leading to swelling and soft, crumbling material
  • Paint failure on south- and west-facing walls where sun and rain cycle back and forth
  • Persistent moss and algae growth on shaded siding, roofing, and trim, especially near tree cover or on the north side of a home
  • Caulking and trim that has shrunk or cracked, opening small gaps where water works its way behind the siding
  • Roofing that's lost granule protection or developed moss mats that hold moisture against the shingle

Individually these look like small maintenance items. Left alone through a few Whatcom County winters, they turn into sheathing damage, rot, and repairs that cost far more than the siding job would have.

Why We Install James Hardie Fiber Cement — and Nothing Else

We made a deliberate decision to install only James Hardie fiber cement siding. We don't install vinyl, LP SmartSide, Cemplank, Allura, or primed wood products like spruce or cedar. That's not a marketing line — it's a standard we hold to because of what we've seen those materials do over time in exactly this kind of climate.

Vinyl is inexpensive and low-maintenance in a dry climate, but it can warp in heat, crack in cold, and it doesn't hold paint if a homeowner ever wants to change the color. Engineered wood products like LP SmartSide perform reasonably well when installation and maintenance are followed to the letter, but they're wood-based, and wood-based products are inherently more vulnerable to the moisture cycling this region puts them through — any lapse in caulking, flashing, or field-cut sealing becomes an entry point for water. Other fiber cement brands like Cemplank and Allura are legitimate products, but we've standardized on one system, one factory finish, and one warranty structure so we know exactly what we're putting on a home and how it will hold up.

James Hardie fiber cement is non-combustible, dimensionally stable, and doesn't feed moss and mildew the way wood-based siding can. Its ColorPlus factory-applied finish is baked on and warranted separately from the substrate, which means far less repainting over the life of the siding — a real advantage in an area that gets this much wet weather. Hardie's HZ5 product line is engineered specifically for climates like ours, with freeze-thaw and moisture performance built into the product rather than added on. Combined with a strong transferable warranty, it's the product we're willing to stand behind on an Everson home for decades, not just for the first few years.

Siding, Roofing, Windows, and Decks — One Local Crew

Beyond siding, we handle roofing, windows, and decks, and we look at all four together on every job. A siding replacement is the right time to check flashing at the roofline, look at window seals for hidden leak paths, and evaluate whether a deck's ledger board and framing are holding up to the same moisture exposure as the walls behind it. Homes fail at the connections between systems as often as they fail within one system, so we don't treat siding as an isolated project.

Working locally out of Lynden means we're not driving in from out of the area for a one-time bid and disappearing after the invoice. If a question comes up two years after installation, we're still around and still working in Whatcom County.
